I believe spoons are cut out of metal, although I am not sure. In any case this might explain the shape of the traditional spoons. If you remember the traditional Russian wood spoons are round and wide. Again because that makes sense as far as wood carving is concerned.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also mechanically you need a little more control of your spoon when you tilt it.
